China's marine forecast station Sunday issued a yellow alert for a powerful typhoon moving into the East China Sea after barrelling into southwestern Japan. It could create up to seven-metre-high waves in the eastern part of the East China Sea between Sunday noon and Monday noon.
Typhoon Phanfone, downgraded from an earlier super typhoon, was moving at 20 km per hour, Xinhua quoted the marine forecast station as saying.
Waves as high as 3 metres will be seen off the coast near Shanghai and Zhejiang province, the centre said, warning vessels operating in the waters to take precautions.
China has a four-tier colour-coded weather warning system, with red representing the most severe warning, followed by orange, yellow and blue.
Another typhoon, Vongfong, which was about 660 km east-southeast of Guam as of Sunday morning, was approaching the Mariana Islands, it added.
