The Central government has sanctioned 4,227 posts in Delhi Police exclusively for criminal investigation, the Delhi High Court was told on Wednesday.

A division bench of Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva was informed by Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Sanjay Jain that for the purpose of separating criminal investigation from maintaining law and order additional posts have been created.

The posts would be operationalised in two phases, half in 2016-17 and the rest in 2017-18 after a review of the scheme, the ASG said.

Taking note of the submissions of the ASG, the bench made it clear that these additional personnel, once recruited, would be used for crime investigation only.

The court was hearing a PIL seeking measures for women safety in the national capital and to increase the police force.
