China congratulates new Myanmar president

China on Tuesday congratulated Myanmar on the election of U Htin Kyaw as president.

"China looks forward to strengthening cooperation with Myanmar's new government," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said.

He said China will continue to support Myanmar's efforts towards stability, development and ethnic reconciliation, and described the two countries as "friendly neighbours", Xinua reported.

"We believe that with common efforts, the China-Myanmar partnership will be consolidated and enhanced," the spokesperson said.
