Dalai Lama saddened by quake deaths in Taiwan

Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, has expressed sadness over the earthquake in Taiwan and wrote to its President Tsai Ing-wen, expressing grief over the loss of life.

"I understand that every effort is being made to rescue the injured and provide relief to those affected by this tragedy," the Dalai Lama wrote in his letter to the President.

"I offer condolences to Your Excellency and to the families who have lost the loved ones," he added.

The Dalai Lama has visited Taiwan several times to deliver teachings.

Nine people died and 268 were injured in Tuesday's quake, according to Taiwan's National Fire Agency.

 

The figures are expected to rise.
