After repeated ceasefire violations by Pakistani side in Jammu, Rajouri and Poonch districts all day, the border residents of Jammu region witnessed an eerie calm on Wednesday night.

The police said there were no major incidents of shelling or firing by the Pakistani side during the night.

While Pakistan Rangers used mortars and automatics to target Indian positions in Akhnoor sector of the international border here on Tuesday, its army used even heavier mortars to indiscriminately target military and civilian positions in Rajouri and Poonch districts.

"They (Pakistan Army) used 120 mm and 82 mm mortar shells to target military and civilian positions in Krishna Ghati sector of Poonch district and in Nowshera sector of Rajouri district yesterday (Tuesday)," a defence official said.

"Pakistani guns fell silent after Indian troops effectively retaliated at Krishna Ghati and Nowshera sector," he added.

Over 25,000 residents from border villages in Akhnoor and Jurian areas of Khour tehsil, Pargwal, Kanachak and Hira Nagar moved away for safety.

They were put up in makeshift accommodations away from the international border.

Migration of border residents continued on Tuesday from villages close to the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri and Poonch districts.
