At least eight bodies were found Sunday and a person remained missing after landslides in North Sumatra province of Indonesia, an official said.

Heavy rains were blamed for the disaster in Berastagi sub-district of Tanah Karo district, said Bowo Asa, senior official of the provincial disaster management and mitigation agency.

"Eight corpses were found Sunday morning. Three of them are children. Another child is still missing," he told Xinhua.

Most of the bodies were pulled from the wreckage of homes at the slope of a hill after being crumpled by piles of soil, said Asa.

Search for the missing child has been underway, he said.

Heavy rain has often triggered widespread flooding and landslide across Indonesia, a vast archipelago country with a population of over 238 million.
