The Indian armed forces will expand training facilties in order to make up for shortage of officers, according to Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar.

Parrikar spoke to IANS Wednesday during a media interaction in Goa Wednesday, his first since formally taking charge of the defence ministry.

"As far as training is concerned, we are increasing training capacity of the army, air force and all. There are moves to improve the numbers... Today there is only one NDA (National Defence Academy)," Parrikar said.

The Indian armed forces are short of over 10,000 officers, according to media reports quoting defence ministry officials.

Training facilities for the armed forces would also need to be spruced up, Parrikar added.
