The INS Vikrant, India's indigenous aircraft carrier being built at the Cochin shipyard for the Indian Navy, was undocked here on Wednesday, officials said.

The 40,000-tonne warship's undocking took place at 2 p.m., said shipyard officials.

The construction of the ship was launched in August 2013 by then defence minister A.K. Antony's wife Elizabeth.

As the warship -- built to carry 36 fixed-wing aircraft -- has been undocked now, the rest of the work would be done while it floats.

As things stand now, the ship will be inducted into the Indian Navy in 2018.

Before that, sea trials will begin in 2017.
