Sensex closes 171 points in red (Third Lead)

A benchmark index of Indian equities markets, the 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex), on Thursday provisionally closed the day's trading 170.62 points, or 0.69 percent, in the negative territory.

The wider 50-scrip Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) also provisionally closed trading in the red -- lower by 45.65 points or 0.61 percent -- at 7,486.15 points.

The BSE Sensex, which opened at 24,815.70 points, closed at 24,623.34 points (at 03.47 p.m.) -- down 170.62 points or 0.69 percent from the previous day's close at 24,793.96 points.

The Sensex touched a high of 24,817.48 points and a low of 24,471.39 points during the day's trade.
