At least 82,000 persons joined Asia's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) pride parade in Taiwan on Saturday to defend the right to freedom and the fight against discrimination.

Shang Wen Tsai, head of the Taiwan LGBT Family Rights Advocacy, said though there seemed to be an increasing external acceptance for the community, there was still a lot of discrimination that did not allow LGBT people to act freely, Efe news reported.

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen posted on her Facebook page that she still supported equality after coming to power and that she was confident the parliament would soon take action for LGBT rights.

Delegations from the European Union, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, New Zealand, Netherlands and Britain joined the march in solidarity for equal rights.

Many participants expressed confidence that same-sex marriage would be approved in Taiwan this year or the next.
