Around 42,000 buses may go off the roads in West Bengal from Aug 20 as a section of operators called a three-day strike Wednesday.

According to the operators, the state government failed to hike fares despite the formation of several expert committees over the year to look into the demands of the bus associations.

"We have met with the transport minister several times and expert committees have submitted reports. They have repeatedly sought more time.

"But they have not decided yet. So we have called a 72-hour (three-day) strike," Tapan Banerjee of the Joint Council of Bus Syndicates, one of the largest bus operators in the state, told IANS.

He said six bus associations will be participating in the strike.
