This refers to the report "Modi backs UIDAI, seeks accelerated DBT rollout" (July 6). It was heartening to see that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has - realising the intrinsic worth of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) - laid aside partisan politics and given the green signal for an accelerated rollout of the Direct Benefits Transfer scheme based on Aadhaar.
True to his style, Modi has once and for all laid to rest the controversy between the dedicated, professional UIDAI team and a bunch of self-seeking bureaucrats of the National Population Register, who were more interested in building an empire than the results.
Recognising the worth of information technology wizards such as Nandan Nilekani, perhaps Modi should invite him to head UIDAI once again, and Nilekani should accept the proposal to fulfil his dream of enrolling over one billion Indians under the Aadhaar scheme.
