Twelve inmates, most of them youths, escaped from a drug de-addiction centre in a village near Ambala Cantt after breaking its boundary wall, police said today.

One of the escaped inmates, a resident of Ambala City, was found in an injured condition, they added.

He was taken to the Civil Hospital, where doctors declared him "brought dead", officials said.

Police suspect that he may have been hit by some vehicle while he was trying to cross a road.

Superintendent of Police (Ambala) Abhishek Jorwal said the centre was being run by a private organisation which was responsible for the security of the inhabitants.

An investigation was underway, Jorwal said.
