A two-year-old girl was mauled to death by a leopard at a village in Gujarat's Amreli district, a senior forest official said.

The girl was sleeping in a cotton field where her parents worked as labourers at Rayadi village of Khambha taluka in Amreli on Wednesday night when the feline attacked her and dragged her about 100 metres from there, deputy conservator of forest Anshuman Sharma said.

Later, the girl's parents found her missing and during their search found the body about 100 metres away from the field.

The upper portion of the girl's body was crushed and the pugmarks indicated that she was killed by a leopard, Sharma said.

The deceased's father, Gujariya Mevada, hails from Alirahpur district in Madhya Pradesh.

The forest department's team rushed to the spot after her parents and people from the village brought it to their notice yesterday, the official said.

The forest staff has put up three cages in the area and are laying traps to catch the leopard.

Sharma also said that they will hand over a cheque of Rs 1.5 lakh to the parents of the girl today.
