A three-year old elephant calf which fell into a 30-foot deep well at a village in the district was rescued today after a four-hour operation.

The male calf, part of a herd of six elephants, fell into the well in Kaidakolli, about 70 kms from here, last evening.

Efforts by some villagers to bring it up failed because of darkness, forest department sources said.

As part of rescue operation, the well was widened from one side and a pathway dug into it by making a makeshfit ramp with bamboos and other trees around 7.00 am.

The calf came up on its own and the operations lasted for nearly four hours, they said.
