An elephant calf drowned in a canal in West Bengal's Bankura district, a forest official said Tuesday.

The incident happened Monday night in Sonamukhi range when a herd of elephants was drinking water from the canal of the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC).

"The herd was drinking water from the canal when the water level rose due to discharge of water by the DVC. While the adult tuskers managed to come out, a male calf about one and a half years old got trapped and drowned," Divisional Forest Officer Bankura (North) Division S.C. Das said.

Das said the herd had come from the neighbouring Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary in Jharkhand.
