A man fatally shot his mother, her husband, and another woman before killing himself inside a suburban Kansas City home as his daughter escaped the house and called police, authorities said.

Platte County Sheriff Mark Owen said a 14-year-old girl called them on Sunday night to report the shooting in an upscale neighbourhood outside Parkville, Missouri, about 16.09 kilometres northwest of Kansas City.

Owen said today the shooter was Douglas Pauling, 50.

Investigators believe Pauling shot his mother, Sharmalee Pauling, 73; her husband, Carl Deruyscher, 66; and Margaret Girard, 49. The teenager who survived was the child of Girard and Douglas Pauling, The Kansas City Star reported.

Owen didn't release information today on a possible motive for the shooting.

The girl was placed in protective custody until relatives arrived. She came to the house with her mother for dinner, Owen said.

A dispatcher can be heard on captured police scanner communications saying that the female survivor was reporting that her father had a gun, had fired at her and shot another relative. The dispatcher said the caller indicated that the victims would be in the dining room.

The girl was able to get out of the house before a SWAT team made its way inside and found the victims. Capt. Jeffery Shanks, a spokesman for the sheriff's office, said the girl was questioned but isn't considered a suspect.
