The four were arrested yesterday by officers of Habra police station from the state's North 24 Parganas district, police said, adding that two children were accompanying them.

According to police, the group was seen roaming suspiciously in the Maslandapur bus sand area here on Tuesday afternoon.

Upon detaining them, the police found out that they had crossed the border illegally and immediately arrested the four adults under The Foreigners Act.

They were produced in Barasat court and were remanded to judicial custody, the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) of North 24 Parganas district, Kalyan Roy, said.

The two minors are with their mother, the Superintendent of Police (SP) of North 24 Parganas, C Sudhakar, said.

According to a senior officer of the district police, the arrested persons failed to produce any valid documents.

"We need to find out whether they at all possess any valid documents... We cannot let anybody roam around in the country," the SP said.
