8 injured in attack by illegal sand miners

Four officials of the state irrigation department and as many policemen were injured when they were attacked allegedly by people involved in illegal sand mining in Katwa area of Burdwan district today.

Superintendent of Police Kunal Agarwal said drivers of trucks carrying sand lifted from the Ajay river and local villagers attacked the eight early today when they stopped the trucks near Nabagram locality.

They were first taken to Katwa Sub-divisional Hospital from where two of them were referred to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital.

Two persons were detained in connection with the attack, Agarwal said.

Initially, one more irrigation department official was reported missing following the attack, but he was later found in Burdwan, he said.
