An Afghan refugee was stabbed to death with a kitchen knife in a German shelter for asylum seekers, and police have arrested another Afghan as a suspect, media reports said today.

It was the latest violence to hit one of the often crowded facilities as the EU's most populous and biggest economy is on course to take in one million asylum seekers this year.

In the latest incident, a 26-year-old man is accused of killing a 22-year-old in the town of Hassloch in the southwestern state off Rhineland-Palatinate, reported local public broadcaster RNF.

The victim was repeatedly stabbed in the chest in an argument that erupted for unknown reasons late Monday in the small shelter, said chief prosecutor Hubert Stroeber.

Another knife attack, in a refugee shelter in Kelkheim in the central state of Hesse, left a 21-year-old man badly injured, said police who arrested a suspect aged 16 late Monday, national news agency DPA reported.
