Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh has hailed the passage of Central University Amendment Bill 2014 in the Lok Sabha, which paves the way for setting up of Mahatma Gandhi Central University at Motihari in Bihar.

"The present Amendment Bill was necessitated because the previous central government was not so keen to establish Central University named after Mahatama Gandhi in Motihari," Singh was quoted as saying in an official statement.

Yesterday, Lok Sabha passed a bill to set up one more central university in Bihar. The Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2014, was first introduced by HRD Minister Smriti Irani in the House in August.

Singh, a five-term MP from Motihari since 1989, "expressed his happiness over passing of Central University Amendment Bill 2014 in the Lok Sabha yesterday which provides for establishment of Mahatma Gandhi Central University in Motihari (Bihar)."

He noted that Motihari has historical importance because Champaran movement by Mahatama Gandhi during freedom struggle was launched from this area.

At present, there is just one central university in Bihar and that is located in Gaya. The university at Motihari would have its jurisdiction north of river Ganges in the state.
