Amnesty International India today welcomed UN's naming of three experts to conduct a comprehensive probe into alleged human rights violations in Sri Lanka during the armed conflict in 2009.

"Their appointment is a welcome sign of progress in the effort to establish once and for all what happened in the final phase of Sri Lanka's long armed conflict and to ensure justice, truth and reparation for victims," the human rights body said in a release.

UN had named Pakistani Human Rights activist Asma Jahangir, Martti Ahtisaari, former President of Finland and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Silvia Cartwright, a former Governor-General and High Court judge of New Zealand to probe allegations of abuse of human rights and related crimes during the armed conflict involving Sri Lankan army and the LTTE.
