The West Bengal government is discussing internally on how to relax the land ceiling restrictions to promote the farm sector.

"Like tea estates, fruit orchards should also be allowed similar benefit of land holding to promote food processing. If we want to promote orchards like mango and pineapple, investors will require few hundred of acres," state minister for food processing, Krishnendu Narayan Choudhury said at an Agri-horti fest here today.

"We are discussing internally about revoking the land ceiling or find ways how to ramp up capacity building specifically for the processing sector," he said.

According to the land ceiling, no one can hold more than 24 acres of land. But, the Bengal government offers relaxation for industrial projects.

"Market development is essential for development of the food processing industry in the state," the minister said.

State Agricultural Marketing minister Arup Roy said "The state government has actively taken up the cause of agri productivity augmentation and farm mechanisation, towards ensuring betterment of the economic conditions of the farming community.
