The BJP today hailed the Supreme Court judgment upholding the death sentence awarded to the convicts in the sensational December 16, 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape-and-murder case, saying it will act as a deterrent to such heinous crimes.
BJP spokesperson G V L Narasimha Rao said the verdict will complement the Union government's efforts to ensure stringent punishment for crime against women.
It sends out a strong signal to those who indulge in crime against women, he said.
"It will act as a strong deterrent against heinous crimes like rape against women," he said.
The Supreme Court today dismissed pleas filed by three out of the four convicts seeking review of its verdict upholding the death penalty awarded to them in the gangrape-and-murder case. The court said no grounds have been made out by them for review of the verdict.
