A programme coordinator of the National Service Scheme (NSS) in Burdwan University today alleged that around Rs 20 lakh was diverted from the project and spent by the university authorities elsewhere.
"For the past one and half years the NSS project office is closed, computers have broken down, there is no Internet connection. Repeated attempts to draw the University authority's attention have only fallen on deaf ears.
"Both the UGC and the state government provide funds for the NSS project and I think around Rs 20 lakh has been diverted from there and spent elsewhere by the authorities," said Professor Jyotirmoy Goswami, the programme coordinator (NSS) at Burdwan University.
When asked to comment on the allegations, University vice-chancellor Smriti Kumar Sarkar told PTI "I am presently out of station with some university work. I will seek a report from the officials on my return and will also ask Prof Goswami about the matter. He should have come to the authorities first with the whole matter, than going to the media."
NSS is a project under the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and was launched in 1969 across 37 Universities with the primary focus on development of personality of students through community service.
