Celebratory firing banned in Shamli district

Authorities have banned celebratory firing in Shamli district of Uttar Pradesh where an 8-year-old boy had died after being shot by Samajwadi Party workers celebrating panchayat poll results.

Shamli Circle Officer Nishank Sharma said here today that celebratory firing has been banned and asked owners of banquet hallsto prohibit these occurrences and inform authorities about any such incident.

Strict action would be taken against those found responsible, he added.

The eight-year-old was killed during celebratory firing by Samajwadi Party workers at Kairana town in Shamli district on February 7, triggering protests by locals.

The victim, Sami, who was passing by the area in a rickshaw, was hit during the firing by SP workers who were celebrating the victory of party candidate Nafisa in the local body polls from the town.
 

The SHO of Kairana town has been suspended and the Circle Officer there has been shifted.
