Prolific Hollywood producer Craig Zadan, best known for his award-winning adaptation of "Chicago" and producing three Oscars telecasts, has died. He was 69.
Zadan died of complications from a recent shoulder replacement surgery on Monday night, according to Deadline.
"We are stunned that the man behind so many incredible film, theater, and television productions several of them joyous musicals was taken away so suddenly," NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt said.
"Craig's distinguished career as a passionate and consummate producer is eclipsed only by his genuine love for the thousands of actors, directors, writers, musicians, designers, and technicians he worked with over the years. His absence will be felt in our hearts and throughout our business."
Zadan championed musicals and was active in films, tv and stage productions. He is best known for bringing the adaptations of "The Sound of Music", "Peter Pan" and "Hairspray". He was set to produce the forthcoming live TV productions of "Bye Bye Birdie' and "A Few Good Men".
Hollywood celebrities expressed shock over Zadan's sudden death.
"Wow so sad to hear about Craig Zadan. He had music and dance in his soul. And when people are dancing and singing the world is a better place. RIP Craig and Cut Loose!," wrote Kevin Bacon, who starred in 1984's Footloose which Zadan produced.
Actor Neil Patric Harris remembered Zadan as "a wonderful, kind spirit".
"I'm stunned and saddened the unexpected passing of Craig Zadan. He's been a friend my entire adult life, championed me to host the Oscars, brought musical theatre back to TV. A wonderful, kind spirit. My sincere condolences to his family and his partner, Elwood. #RIP"
Frequent collaborator Kristen Chenoweth wrote, "Annie, The Music Man, Promises, Hairspray Craig, you were there with me from the beginning. This is a true loss not only for me, but for the world. Rest in peace, sweetheart."
Katie Couric said, "This is so heartbreaking. A wonderful man and a brilliant producer.
