Marriage of a 16-year-old girl was prevented following intervention of the officials who raided the girl's house where wedding rituals were going on in full swing at Chauhankhedi village here today.

"Based on a tip off, we prevented marriage of Rajkumari (16) at Chauhankhedi village under Kudel police station area," an official of the Women and Child Development Department said, adding, the 'baraat' (groom's side) was made to return back.

The minor girl's parents have given an undertaking to the authorities that they will not marry off their daughter until she is of marriageable age, the official said.

Marriages are against the law until boys attain the age of 21 and girls are 18 years of age.

Violation of the law invites two years of rigorous imprisonment or a fine of Rs 1 lakh or both under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006.
