An NGO has urged Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh for facelift of the Brij Raj Swami temple at Nurpur, near here.

Jan Chetna, the NGO based in Nurpur, has urged the Chief Minister to develop the Krishna temple of historical significance by providing the requisite infrastructure on its premises, adding that it had the potential to attract tourists, especially those who visit Kangra valley.

The 16th-century temple is reportedly the only one in the world where idols of Lord Krishna and Meera are worshipped.

It has a gorgeous black stone Krishna idol which was brought from Rajasthan during the reign of Raja Jagat Singh.

It is believed that the idol was originally worshipped by Meera and it was given to the king of Nurpur as a return gift by the Maharana of Chittorgarh when the former had paid a visit to him.

Along with the idol, the king had also brought a maulsari (a fruit-bearing plant) sapling which had gone dry on his way back and was made alive again through 'pooja' and chanting of 'mantras'.

It is a huge tree now.
