Opposition Congress today strongly condemned the "brutal" lathicharge on the students of NIT Srinagar and demanded a time-bound judicial inquiry into it and bringing out the lapses in handling of the situation.
"We strongly condemn the brutal lathicharge on the students of NIT Srinagar, which has left several students severely injured. We demand a time-bound judicial enquiry into the incident of lathicharge and to bring out the lapses in handling of the situation," senior vice president of the party's state unit Sham Lal Sharma told reporters here.
Sharma, who chaired an urgent meeting of senior Congress functionaries here to take stock of the NIT situation, lashed out at the state government for its "utter failure" and "mishandling of the situation especially the brutal use of force against the peaceful students."

He expressed serious concern over the prevailing situation and the sense of insecurity among the students and parents which has further aggravated due to the uncalled for and unjustified use of force.
The party has expressed full solidarity with the students and their parents and asked the government to defuse the situation by taking the necessary measures including ordering a high level judicial inquiry to look into the incident and mishandling of the situation, he said.
