Congress MP Ravneet Singh Bittu, charged with damaging public property and obstructing government servant from official duty, today surrendered in a local court, which remanded him in judicial custody.
Non-bailable warrants were issued against Bittu, MP from Ludhiana.
He was charged under various sections of the IPC for damaging public property and obstructing a government servant in performing official duty, while leading a farmers protest against sale of "spurious" pesticides that led to huge damage to cotton crops.
The court of Judicial Magistrate Ramandeep Singh sent him to judicial custody till October 19.
Earlier, Bittu tried to surrender at the civil lines police station but the police refused to arrest him.
On September 30, Bittu and some party activists were detained by police when they were marching towards the Deputy Commissioner's office here in protest against the sale of 'spurious' pesticide in Punjab, leading to huge crop losses.
The protesters, led by Bittu marched to the office of the Director of Agriculture here and locked it. They then marched to the Deputy Commissioner's office to lodge a protest where they were detained, and later released.
Before surrendering, Bittu said that chief minister Parkash Singh Badal should immediately demand a relief package of Rs 51,000 crore from the Centre to bail out the debt ridden farmers of the state.
