Congress leader and former Uttar Pradesh minister Ameeta Singh today raised questions over the just concluded panchayat polls, alleging that there were discrepancies in the counting at a ward here.

"For hours an independent candidate for the district development committee post, Indrajit Yadav alias Jeete, was leading over Shambhu Nath Yadav from ward No 31 in Bhadar block. But in the last phase, the SP supported candidate, Shambhu Yadav, was declared elected and issued certificate of victory.

"How did it happen?" she asked.

Addressing a press conference here, Ameeta questioned the roles of Amethi district magistrate and Bhadar block Returning Officer (RO) in the polls and said "these officials have killed the spirit of democratic process".

When contacated Amethi District magistrate Jagat Raj Tripathi said the counting of votes was "fair" and there would be no recounting.

"The voting and counting process have been free and fair. The results are also fair and there is no chance of recounting of votes," Tripathi said.

However Ameeta Singh said "democracy has been killed in Amethi and the matter will be raised at proper platform."

She also alleged "there is no law and order in the district and administration has become deaf and dumb".

"I will not permit the looters to play foul and fraudulent game in Amethi," she said.
