The extent of the problem indeed is serious and will require urgent appropriate measures, the study by FICCI along with NACE international said.

The study also provides scientific basis to facilitate formulation of appropriate strategies to control the menace of corrosion.

"The study indicates that the corrosion is impacting 4.2 per cent of Indian GDP. The extent of the problem indeed is serious and will require urgent appropriate measures," FICCI said in a statement.

Corrosion is a natural process, which converts a refined metal to a more stable form, such as its oxide, hydroxide, or sulfide. It can cause damage to everything from automobiles, drinking water systems to pipelines, bridges, factories and public buildings etc.
