Sixteen CPI(M) activists were detained by Bidhanagar police for showing black flags and shouting slogans at Union Home Minister Amit Shah's convoy in adjacent North 24 Parganas district.

CPI(M) workers had waved black flags and 'No NRC' posters and shouted slogans 'Amit Shah go back' as the union minister's convoy passed through the VIP road.

The CPI(M) supporters, who were led by CPI(M) North 24 Parganas working district secretary Palash Das, were arrested and taken to Baguihati Police station.

CPI(M) central committee leader Sujan Chakraborty condemned the police action and wondered whether the detention of Left activists for protesting against Shah was an indication of "political setting" between TMC and BJP.

"While @Cpimspeak demonstrated demanding 'No #NRC', on @AmitShah's way to Calcutta, the youths are beaten & arrested. @MamataOfficial ensured that @AmitShah be not embarrassed at all. Is the result of mutual understanding?," Chakraborty tweeted.

Shah, who is also the BJP president, was in the city to address a seminar on National Register of Citizens (NRC) and Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019.
