Authorities in Iraq say a double suicide bombing at a military base north of Baghdad has killed nine soldiers.

Police officials say the first bomber blew himself tonight up at the gate of the army facility in Tarmiyah town. Seconds later, the second bomber set off his explosive belt among a crowd of soldiers who gathered after the earlier blast.

The explosions wounded another 24 people.

Tarmiyah, a Sunni town and former insurgent stronghold, is about 50 kilometres north of Baghdad.

Hospital officials confirmed the casualty figure. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to journalists.

Today's attacks bring the death toll for this month to at least 369, according to an Associated Press count. Many attacks may go unreported.
