In a crackdown on unauthorised advertisements, the East Delhi Municipal Corporation has removed over 20,000 illegal hoardings, banners, among others, from April 10 to June 16.

Both North and South Corporations are in the process of formulating new advertisement policies, and drive against illegal advertisements is a core component of that.

According to an action taken report released by the civic body, out of a total of 20,230 illegal advertisements, the advertising department (headquarters) of the EDMC removed 7,496 hoardings, banners, flexes and posters, etc in different areas of east Delhi, from April 10 to June 16.

During the same period, Shahdara North's zonal department removed 9,174 advertisements while Shahdara South's zonal department took down 3,836 advertisements.

"Besides, headquarters-level action, there are also actions on zonal levels. All three take anti-encroachment drive regularly," a senior official of the EDMC said.

EDMC has two zones -- Shahdara (North) and Shahdara (South). Maximum number of advertisements were removed on May 20 -- 156 by advertising department headquarter, 1,479 by Shahdara (North) zonal department and 72 by Shahdara (South).

Taking a serious view about hoardings and posters, both political and commercial, being put up across the city in "gross violation" of outdoor advertising policy, Delhi High Court in April had directed municipal authorities to immediately remove such illegal structures.
