A former Chairman of local panchayat in Dankaur was today shot dead by three unidentified assailants, following which agitated mob allegedly put the Dankaur police station on fire, police said.

Three fire tenders were rushed and fire was immediately brought under control, they said.

"Three assailants riding motorcycle allegedly fired bullets at the former chairman of local panchayat Manmohan Singh. He was rushed to Kailash hospital where he was declared brought dead," said Brijesh Kumar Singh, Superintendent of Police (Greater Noida)

Angry over his death, people gathered in front of Dankaur police station and allegedly held four policemen captive to protest against the killing.

Following intervention of senior police officers, the policemen were freed on the assurance that killers would be arrested soon.

However, some people in the mob set the Dankaur police station on fire.

"Three fire tenders were rushed there and fire has been extinguished," said Matloob Hasan, Fire Station Officer.
