The former police chief in China's northern Inner Mongolia region has been detained on suspicion of murdering a 28-year-old woman who he had "known for several years", media reported today.
Zhao Liping, who was in charge of police in the region from 2005 to 2010, was suspected of being involved in the murder that took place in Inner Mongolia's Chifeng city on Friday, the regional public security bureau said.
The 64-year-old former police chief had "nearly 30 years of experience in the public security system," state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

According to the respected financial publication Caixin, Zhao had known the woman "for several years."
The two reports, however, did not elaborate about the case.
In 2012, Zhao was elected deputy chairman of the CPPCC Inner Mongolia Regional Committee.
Inner Mongolia has a population of 25 million and covers more than a 10th of total land mass of China.
