The date of shifting Assam Rifles battalion headquarters from Aizawl to Zokhawsang area, 15 km from here, is yet to be determined as the MHA-appointed firm is yet to complete the infrastructure at the new site, Home Minister Lalchamliana told the state Assembly on Wednesday.
In a written reply to a question from independent MLA V L Zaithanzama, Lalchamliana said the Assam Rifles has been instructed to vacate the Main Barrack, including Mandir and Church areas and MT Garage, the lands at Mc Donald Hill and the Commandant Bungalow, known as the 'Loch House'.
"The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA)-appointed public sector company Engineering Projects (India) Ltd is yet to complete 38 type-2 residential quarters and hand them over to Assam Rifles authorities," he said.
The MHA had directed the paramilitary force to shift its battalion headquarters from Aizawl to Zokhawsang by May 31.
The ministry had also asked the Assam Rifles authorities to submit an action taken report on the shifting of the battalion headquarters.
In the wake of the killing of 12 civilians by the Assam Rifles personnel in 1988, the Mizo National Front (MNF) government headed by then chief minister Laldenga had demanded shifting of the force's battalion headquarters from the heart of Aizawl.
