A former woman AIADMK MLA, now in the DMK, was arrested here Friday for allegedly spreading defamatory information about a Tamil Nadu minister through the social media, police said.

P Saraswathi has been booked under five sections of Indian Penal code including those relating to criminal intimidation, provoking breach of peace and causing alarm among the public.

The arrest was made based on a complaint by Keerambur AIADMK unit Secretary Raja that she was allegedly defaming Electricity Minister P Thangamani with her posts on WhatsApp.

Police said the former MLA had joined the DMK after the demise of AIADMK supremo J Jayalaithaa in December 2016.

The complainant claimed that when he protested against the deregatory remarks against the minister, Saraswathy had threatened him.

The former MLA was arrested after a brief inquiry, police said.
