Four persons were today arrested for allegedly smuggling arms and cartridges inside fruit-cartons in the central part of the city, police said.

Mohammed Mintu, Mohammed Jumman, Sheikh Raju and Sheikh Siraz (all in their mid-20s) were arrested after two pipe guns and eight rounds of cartridges were seized from inside a fruit-carton in a bus, which was travelling from Bihar's Nawada, a senior police officer said.

Acting on a tip-off that a few local youths were trying to smuggle arms in the area, a team of police personnel from the Jorasanko police station stopped a bus near the College Street market area this morning at around 6.30 AM, he said.

The driver and helper of the bus had an altercation with the police personnel when they were stopped. Later, the altercation turned into a scuffle in which an officer was injured, the officer said.

Mintu is a resident of Nawada, while the other three are from the Kalabagan area in the Jorasanko police station limits, he added.

"We are questioning the four and trying to find out the purpose of bringing in the arms into the state. We are also trying to find out whether there are other people involved in the gang" the officer said.
