Students of Gangadhar Meher University (GMU) today boycotted classes, locked the institution entrance gate and staged demonstration in front of it protesting against the transfer of teachers.

The students said at a time when the university is facing teaching staff shortage, the government has transferred four teachers and there were no relievers.

The agitation by the students affected admission in the college for some time.

Official sources said, the transfer order of the four lecturers of the University was issued on August 3. While a lecturer of department of physics and another of Odia department have already been relieved, the authorities are yet to relieve two teachers of chemistry and political science departmets.

A students delegation had met Vice-chancellor S S Rath over the issue on August 4.

The institution was upgraded to university status on May 30 last year. Presently it has only 58 teachers, including 12 adhoc teachers, against the sanctioned strength of 119.

University deputy tegistrar U C Pati said the students have demanded for filling up of the vacant teaching posts and submitted a memorandum in this regard.

The memorandum will be sent to the government, he added.
