Introducing the European 'gharana' in our films, the 'musical narrative' of Aparna Sen directed 'Goynar Baksho', successfully running for three weeks across theatres, was today unveiled for the public.
"There have been such narrative sound tracks, studded with musical composition, voice-over and background score in a single thread in the European cinema. It helps the listener, not having seen the film, get a feel of the film and follow its narrative even sitting at home. It is not a typical audio CD with songs," Aparna Sen told PTI here.
She credited the whole musical team of 'Goynar Baksho', music director Debojyoti Mishra and singers Anindyo, Upal, Rupankar and Kaushiki Chakraborty for pulling off the whole concept "which sits easy on the ears and never sounds jarring," despite the unconventional treatment.
"During our jam session when the musical score was recorded one day, I decided to include a folk rap and Debojyoti was okay with the idea. Me and other women members of the production supplied him with the names of sarees, which obviously he is not familiar with as a man beyond Dhanekhali and Tangai, and the indigenous folk rap came about," she said.
"Happy that the film struck a chord with the audience, families and other segments, and running to packed houses across all theatres. 'Goynar Baksho' deals with a feminist issue but don't know if the audience liked it for that or the touch of magic realism so prevalent in Shirshendu Mukhopadhya's stories having Latin American influence," she said.
"A film can have many layers, and it can be appreciated from the narrative point of view or you might try to get some message through the plot movement. But a director can never be preachy, I have made the jewellery box, called streedhan, a metaphor centering which the lives, outlook and social positions of women spanning three different generations change," the 'Iti Mrinalini' director-lead character said.
Mishra also dubbed the musical narrative as a "whole new experience which can be accomplished only with the director's backing, a sensitive one like Rinadi (Aparna).
The film is having around 70 per cent occupancy in plexes and single screen theatres on weekdays and houseful on weekend evening shows, a spokesperson of producers Venkatesh Films said.
