Governor of Manipur Najma Heptulla today hailed Saikhom Mirabai Chanu's gold-medal winning effort at the Weightlifting World Championship in Anaheim, USA.
Congratulating Mirabai, the Manipur governor said the achievement indeed shows than the state which has a population of less than three million shows the tiny landlocked state is the powerhouse of sports in the country.
"With better training and exposure, sportspersons of her state can perform more," Heptulla told PTI over phone.
Chanu lifted 85 kg in snatch and 109 kg in clean and jerk to total an impressive 194 kg in the women's 48 kg, in the process setting a new national record and becoming the first Indian in over two decades to claim gold in the tournament.
