Alleging inaction against the hooch dens, local people ransacked them and set fire to several of them as police and excise department personnel raided the area, police sources said.

The two youths were also arrested, they said.

The police said one of them, identified as Md Jalaluddin was arrested last night and the other, Sirajul Islam, was nabbed this morning.

The two were both drunk and armed with lathis yesterday as they hit doors of houses Kadambagachi area and passed lewd comments about women inside which made the homeopath, who had recently undergone bypass surgery, to protest, they said.

Angered by his protests, the two youths pushed the homeopath, a popular man in the locality, against a tree and began assaulting him with sticks which made him fall down and collapse, they said.

When local people came to the spot to rescue the doctor, Jalaluddin and Islam fled.

The people took the homeopath to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, the sources said.

Earlier in February last year, a young man Rajib Das was stabbed to death when he protested the molestation of his sister by drunken men.
