The Indian armed forces today celebrated Vijay Diwas, which marks India's victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war, with traditional enthusiasm in Jammu and Kashmir.
Several wreath-laying ceremonies were organised by the Indian Army to mark the 46th anniversary of the victory over Pakistan in the war, that led to the liberation of Bangladesh.
At Dhruva Shahid Smarak at the Northern Command headquarters in Udhampur, 65kms from here, the Indian Army organised a wreath-laying ceremony to pay homage to the soldiers who fought in the war, a defence spokesperson said.
"The supreme sacrifices and undeterred grit of the valiant soldiers of the Indian Army has changed the course of history. Their indomitable courage, unflagging zeal and dogged determination will always be a greatest source of inspiration for all ranks of the Indian Army," General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C), Northern Command, Lt. Gen. D Anbu said.
General-officer-Commanding of the elite White Knight Corps (16 Corps), Lt. Gen. Saranjit Singh, laid a wreath at Ashwamedh Shaurya Sthal, a war memorial, at Nagrota in Jammu.
Officers and jawans paid their homage, the spokesperson said.
Lt. Gen. Singh said the Indian Army has always stood tall and met the challenges faced by the country in an exemplary manner. He urged the troops to always be ready to face any challenge with determination and valour.
The White Knight Corps was raised on June 1, 1972 on the banks of the Tawi River at Nagrota.
On December 16 in 1971, nearly 93,000 troops of the Pakistan Army surrendered before the Indian Army.
