Indian, Bangladeshi officials to hold flag meeting tomorrow

Press Trust of India Dhubri

A senior BSF official said a flag-meeting would be held on the Indo-Bangladesh border here. He, however, refused to disclose the exact location of the meeting.

Besides officials of the BSF and Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB), the meeting would be attended by the District Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of Dhubri and their counterparts of Bangladesh, the sources said.

The Centre has been in touch with the Bangladesh government to recover bodies of victims of the Brahmaputra boat tragedy that may have been washed downstream to the neighbouring country, they said.

Medartary ghat, the site of the ferry accident, is only 15 km from the Indo-Bangladesh border.

Meanwhile, the ill-fated ferry, owned by one Syed Ali, has been found to have been running without a legal permit, Inland Waterways officials said. The machine-operated ferry was constructed way back in 1994 and the owner did not have a licence to operate it.

There are currently 2,000 machine-operated boats and ferries in the district and only 30 of them have valid permits, they added. PTI PPB SB CR
