The Jammu and Kashmir unit of the CPI(M) on Monday held protests here against rising fuel prices in the country.
The protests were led by senior CPI(M) leader and MLA Kulgam M Y Tarigami here at the Press Enclave.
Demanding the withdrawal of the taxes and hike in fuel prices, the protestors, carrying placards, raised slogans against the BJP-led government at the centre for its "anti-poor and anti-farmer" policies.
Addressing the party workers, Tarigami said people were already overburdened with "spiralling" prices of essential commodities and an increase in prices of petroleum products was "adding insult to injury".
"The unprecedented economic burdens are being mounted on the people by Prime Minister Narendra Modi government. The exponentially rising prices of petroleum products are having a crippling effect on the livelihood of millions of poor in India as it has led to the increase in overall price of all essential commodities," he said.
He said the "unprecedented fall" in the value of the rupee reflects the "deep economic crisis created by the BJP government".
