Karna Assembly passes 5 bills

Karnataka Legislative Assembly passed four bills, including the one to amend certain laws to alter the name of the city of Bangalore and few other places in the state.

The Revenue Department had altered the names of twelve places of Karnataka vide notification dated October 31, 2014 and a no-objection from the central government for this alteration was obtained, but still the names of places remained unaltered in various laws in force in Karnataka.

With an intention to amend such laws and for construing, validation and savings of the altered names of certain places, The Karnataka Alteration of Names of Certain Places Bill, 2016 was introduced.
 

The existing and altered names of the places are Bangalore to Bengaluru, Mangalore to Mangaluru, Bellary to Ballari, Bijapur to Vijayapura, Belagaum to Belagavi, Chikmagalur to Chikkamagaluru, Gulbarga to Kalburgi, Mysore to Mysuru, Hospet to Hosapeta, Shimoga to Shivamogga, Hubli to Hubballi and Tumkur to Tumakuru.

The bill that was moved by Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T B Jayachandra was adopted by a voice vote.
