The Maharashtra government today issued a circular seeking donation from ministers, legislators and staff of a day's salary to the Chief Minister's relief fund to help flood-affected Kerala.

The general administration department's circular asks the chief minister, ministers, MLAs, MLCs, civil servants and other staffers to donate the amount from their September salaries.

The circular asked government departments to inform their staffers about the donation and also stated that those unwilling to do so should not be forced.

The circular, however, said that staffers having objections should convey their views to the officials of their departments.

The state government had, on August 18, announced Rs 20 crore financial assistance and also deployed doctors to help Kerala deal with the destruction caused by the floods.

According to the Kerala government, 302 persons have died between August 8-26 due to the floods.
